the lasik experience part 1/2

just came back from my eye assessment at Gleneagles Eye Centre... and i will be doing my LASIK tomorrow!!!

the eye assessment took me about 2.5hrs. the optometrist will first do a series of test to check your eyes, followed by dropping some eye drops to dilate your eyes. afterwhich, you have to rest for 30mins before she checks your eyes again.

after all the test, DR Lee Hung Ming (very reputable surgeon), will see you and give a final review.

cost for assessment: S$185

now i am stuck with this dilemma..

currently, there are 2 types of technology for lasik, 1 is the old way microkeratome (with blade), the other is the newer version, intraLase (without blade)

price: microkeratome (promotional price) S$995/eye (which is S$1,990 for both eyes)
intraLase S$1688/eye (S$3,376 for both eyes)

What is the difference between a corneal flap created with the IntraLase Method and one created with a microkeratome?

The microkeratome is a hand-held instrument, which contains a steel blade that moves back and forth and creates a cut as it travels across the cornea. A microkeratome is only capable of making a single, one-dimensional cut across the cornea. As it cuts, the blade oscillates back and forth, which can leave an irregular surface after the flap is lifted. This can affect the quality of your postoperative vision.
Because of the unique way in which the IntraLase Method creates a precisely positioned layer of bubbles just beneath the surface of your eye, it creates a smooth even surface after your flap is lifted. With the IntraLase Method, a blade never touches your eye.
